Matter & Energy Introduction
BP2-3 [EM69]

These six newly redesigned exercises help children to solidify their knowledge of matter and energy and present them with common terminology they will need in future explorations. Each exercise has two 9½” x 13” cards. One card is cut apart to create a sorting exercise, and the other is left whole for self-checking.

Matter and Energy - Sort 20 label cards under two categories: matter or energy.

States of Matter - Sort 15 everyday things under 3 categories: solid, liquid, gas.

Changes in States of Matter - Match 8 descriptions of changes in matter to 8 verbs describing the type of change.

Energy - Sort 12 familiar conditions or actions under 2 categories: potential energy or kinetic energy

Heat Transfer - Sort 9 types of heat movement under 3 categories: conduction, convection, or radiation.

Energy We Use - Sort 15 cards under 3 categories: Energy Source, Is it renewable?, and Why is it renewable or nonrenewable?

Parts of an Atom Diagram
AT2 [EM24]
Before understanding matter, children must learn about atoms. Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. This set of duplicate diagrams illustrates and defines an atom and its 5 significant parts. The six definition cards are cut off one of the diagrams. The child reads the definition cards and relocates them alongside the atom illustration. The duplicate diagram card serves as the control. Background information and lesson suggestions are included for the teacher. Cards (6Ύ” x 13”) are in full color and laminated.

Elements Around Us
MC1 [EM66]
When children understand that everything around us is composed of chemical elements, they will wonder what elements are found in familiar objects. This duplicate set of picture cards show 20 subjects with text that identifies the chemical elements in each. Cut one set of picture cards apart to make matching exercises. Background information and lesson suggestions are included for the teacher. Cards (4Ύ” x 3Ό”) are in full color and laminated.

Elements Around Us Replicards
MC1w [EM66R]
The 20 subjects illustrated in our Elements Around Us set are duplicated in black line in this set of 6 replicards. Replicards (8½” x 11”) are photocopied to make worksheets. After the children have completed the Elements Around Us card-matching exercises, they use the worksheets to record the information found on each card. We include a blank form so children can draw their own subject and record its elements. A cover sheet is provided so completed worksheets can be stapled together and made into an Elements Around Us take-home booklet.

Classification of Matter Chart & Cards
MC4 [EM23]

After children become familiar with atoms and elements, they are ready to classify matter. Sixteen picture cards represent two main categories of matter, pure substances and mixtures, in four groups: chemical elements, compounds, homogeneous mixtures, and heterogeneous mixtures.

The child places picture cards on the plastic chart (18" x 32"), using the information on the back of the card as the control. The picture cards can also be sorted under six label cards (2-1/8” x 4-1/2”) that duplicate the text on the chart. Background information and lesson suggestions are included for the teacher. Cards (3-1/2” x 3-1/4”) are in full color and laminated.

Element Knowledge
MC3 [EM22]

This set presents two activities.

First: Challenge the student to learn element names, atomic symbols, and their atomic numbers. Both sets of rigid vinyl element-name and symbol cards are cut into strips (222 -1” x 4”). Cut the atomic symbols off one set of the name strips (111 - 1” x 1” tiles). The element-name strips and symbol tiles are used for 3-part matching and for sorting under label cards with titles and definitions for solids, liquids, gases, metals, semimetals, and nonmetals.

Second: Reinforce knowledge of element names and atomic symbols, in addition to introducing groups of elements with similar characteristics. Ten large rigid vinyl cards are printed on two sides, providing two activities for each element group. Cards list and describe associated groups of elements, either a chemical group, such as halogens, or a functional group, such as elements of the atmosphere. Using the element-name strips and atomic symbol tiles, the child completes a card by placing either the element name strips or atomic symbol tiles in the blank boxes. The cards give useful and memorable information that will reinforce overall element knowledge. Background information and lesson suggestions are included for the teacher.

Element Knowledge Replicards
MC3W [EM22R]
Photocopy these 10 replicards to make worksheets to provide 20 additional exercises using our vinyl card set, Element Knowledge (see above). After completing an Element Knowledge card, a child can duplicate the exercise by recording the answers on these worksheets (8½” x 11”). The repetition of writing down the element names and symbols will strengthen recall and understanding of 10 associated groups of elements. Children can keep their worksheets as a record of their work, and can use them to share their element knowledge with others.

The Periodic Table of the Elements
MC2 [EM28]
This up-to-date and one of a kind chart provides a first introduction to the periodic table. It is simplified to show only key data. The base grid identifies elements as solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature. One hundred eleven magnetic vinyl tiles show the atomic symbols and atomic numbers of the elements. In addition, the tiles are color-coded to identify the elements as metal, semimetal, or nonmetal. The child places the magnetic tiles on the chart by matching atomic numbers. (Note: All 111 tiles stay in place, even if the chart is displayed vertically). The set includes a replicard for making photocopies, which shows the completed periodic table, a list of the elements, their atomic numbers, and their attributes and origins. Background information and lesson suggestions are included for the teacher.

Physical and Chemical Changes
MC5 [EM65]
Everything living and non-living experiences change. Learning to distinguish between physical and chemical changes is an important step for further exploration in chemistry. This set of 12 picture cards shows everyday objects before and after a physical or chemical change, such as an egg raw and then cooked, and a glass whole and then broken. Children sort the picture cards under labels (2" x 9½”) that clearly and simply define these physical and chemical changes. Background information and lesson suggestions are included for the teacher. Cards (4-3/4" x 3-1/8") are in full color and laminated.
